PIH, or Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, refers to the darkening of the skin which can occur in areas of scar tissue. This darkening can result from a wide range of traumas to the skin, such as cuts, surgical incisions, scrapes, burns and acne. While physically harmless, these darkened areas can be psychologically distressing as they may detract from an otherwise attractive appearance, especially when on areas of the body visible in public, or in private areas visible by our significant others.
While some of these pigmentations, such as those from minor blemishes and injuries, may fade on their own in time, it can take months or even years, and many of these areas are permanent without treatment.
Fortunately, PIH Laser Therapy can effectively treat these areas painlessly in a relatively short time frame. The laser heats the tissues in the lowest levels of the skin, causing micro-injuries which are not visible on the surface. These micro-injuries are actually beneficial, as your body will naturally produce new healthy tissue to replace the damaged tissue and in the process restore natural skin tones to the treated area.
